The following general
information may assist your application. Please supply details
covering the following issues:
- It
is important that we can maintain up to date contact details for
you. Professional Ex Pat Contractors and
travellers are normally highly mobile and therefore difficult to
locate, so please include and check the accuracy of a message
number and an email address through which we can always trace
you if you points of contact change.
- As a technical placement
agency, the vast majority of opportunities available to overseas
candidates will be for highly specialised Contract
Engineering/Construction projects, or off-shore Contracts where
the location of a candidate is less critical. Companies give
preference to local applicants for permanent vacancies in
Australia due to Visa restrictions (see below). You should
contact us on arrival for a preliminary interview and assessment
to improve prospects of referral to our clients
- An Agency cannot place you
into employment in this country without verification of your
eligibility to work here (a current work Visa). A temporary work
Visa may enable you to obtain short-term Project/Contract work
of less than three months duration with each employer, while
traveling. To obtain these types of opportunities, apply on
arrival in Australia to Agencies such as ours. Employers are
unlikely to hire temporary personnel without a prior personal
interview
- Do remember that you are
competing in a tight employment market where local candidates
will have been interviewed and can expect first preference for
employment opportunities. So it is important to provide
sufficient detail in your resume to enable us to get a good
appreciation of your special technical skills and capacity. A
recent photograph, copies of main qualifications and references
will be beneficial if you expect a client to hire you without
meeting you
- Overseas Engineering
Qualifications need to be vetted by the relevant Australian
Engineering body before being accepted here. In some cases you
may need to upgrade qualifications to meet Australian Standards.
You may also need to get other Qualifications verified, or
obtain relevant Licenses / Tickets before you can work in that
field. (eg: Electrical qualifications need to be
verified in the State in which you intend to work, and you also
need to hold the relevant state's Electrical License before you
can work with power).
- Applicants seeking
Engineering Design positions should familiarise themselves with
our Design Standards and Codes (most are based on International
Standards) - you can find details of these at the Standards
Website Copies of the Standards relevant to your
Engineering discipline are also available from the Australian
Government Printing Office
- If English is not your first
language, your ability to communicate fluently in English may
become an issue for professional vacancies that require
leadership of teams, client services and complex technical
writing. You should accurately state your level of proficiency
with English. Importantly, knowledge of other languages can be
an advantage for certain overseas appointments. So please
disclose other language skills if you wish use them and state
preferred locations for work. Please note that most off-shore
contracts will be in the Asia-Pacific region, and to a lesser
degree in the Middle East
- The logistics of your plans
for arrival, information about whether you have made
arrangements for accommodation etc will also be of special
interest if you are seeking local projects and this needs to be
clearly explained so we don’t waste your time with
opportunities that won’t suit you.
RECENT CHANGES TO
IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES
In order to obtain a position on
the staff of an Australian company, the hiring employer must
lodge a business sponsorship application with the Department of
Immigration and Ethnic Affairs. This entails validation of the
hiring company’s legal status and their financial capacity to
enter into the arrangement with an overseas candidate (including
repatriation costs if the position does not work out).
The employer also has to demonstrate an ongoing
commitment to training Australians for such a role, that the
employment of the overseas candidate would be of benefit to
Australia and finally that the position is a highly skilled one
that is essential to the operations of the company. If all the
above can be proven, a Visa application can be made.
The candidate must then prove
they have the skills and qualifications to meet the criteria set
by the company and also must meet certain health requirements. A
candidate with a pre-existing health condition that could become
a burden on the Australian Public Health System, you will be
required to sign your agreement to cover all related costs.
We hope this information
will increase your chances of gaining successful employment
here. Please advise us of changes to your circumstances so we
can amend the details we are holding on file
